What to expect

Starting therapy can feel like a big step — especially if you’re not sure what to expect. You might feel nervous, uncertain, or even wonder if your problems are “serious enough” for therapy.

Let us reassure you: if it matters to you, it matters. Therapy isn’t about being broken. It’s about being heard. Here’s what you can expect in your first session — so you feel more prepared and less alone.

Before the First Session

Once you get in touch, we’ll arrange an introductory session at a time that works for you.

You can choose how we meet:

  • In person (Leeds) — I’ll send directions and everything you need to know

  • Online — You’ll receive a Zoom link before the session

  • By phone — I’ll call you at the agreed time

The introductory session is half price, and there’s no charge for our initial contact where we arrange it.

During the First Session

This session is a gentle introduction. We won’t dive into anything heavy unless you’re ready.

It’s your space, and you set the pace.

Together, we might:

  • Explore what’s brought you to therapy

  • Talk about what you’re hoping to get from our work together

  • Discuss any previous experiences with counselling (good or bad)

  • Go over practical details like timing, frequency, and boundaries

There’s no pressure to explain everything perfectly — just come as you are.

After the Session

Therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. You’re welcome to continue, pause, or end therapy at any point — it’s your choice.

You can continue to meet:

  • In person

  • Online (Zoom)

  • By phone

If we’ve been working together for a while, I recommend we have 2 sessions before we pause or end to ensure we address any unresolved issues and finish in a safe manner.

One Step at a Time

You don’t need to have the right words or a polished story. Just begin. We’ll meet you there.
