Contrary to what you might read elsewhere, there is no significant difference between these terms. The word counselling was introduced by the psychoanalyst Carl Rogers, who developed his client-centred approach to psychotherapy in the 1950s onwards, moving away from classic Freudian psychoanalytic approaches. Carl Rogers began to work more within education and social work and developed his theory which is now known as person-centred.
Both terms can be used interchangeably and aim to support individuals with their emotional and psychological wellbeing. The difference to look for is the approach a counsellor/psychotherapist use to support their clients.

Literally, therapy of the soul or mind. The word psyche comes from the Greek ‘psuché’ which translated literally means ‘breathe’. It is the non-physical part of a human being, the soul, inner being or life of an individual.

We offer both. It’s entirely up to you and will depend on factors that only you can know about, such as budget and time commitment. We make therapy flexible around your needs. We can discuss what’s right for you at our introductory session.

We recommend we have weekly sessions for the first 6 weeks. This is so that we can build a trusting therapeutic relationship, which is important for effective therapy and will enhance your healing process. However, if this doesn’t work for you, it’s okay, we can work something out between us that does work. Therapy shouldn’t put pressure on you, and we will go at your pace.

You will have our full undivided attention in a safe confidential therapeutic space, where you can share whatever you feel comfortable sharing. We are trained and qualified to support your process of exploration and sense-making. We ensure that we have continual professional development and take care of ourselves through our own supervision and therapy so that we can walk alongside you helpfully and safely. We will collaboratively work towards your goals and what you want to achieve through therapy.

Yes. This is your process and there is no judgement. We will accompany you as far and as long as you want. It is highly recommended that we work towards the break or ending together –usually over 2 sessions. This is to ensure that we end or break in a safe place for you.
-
This is the usual session length that most therapists provide. It is found that 50 minutes is enough time to share and process deep thoughts and emotions, which can sometimes be very tiring for individuals.

There is no exact answer to this question. It varies from person to person depending on what they choose to bring, the pace they wish to go at, life events. This is your therapy and will be led by you. We will never put pressure on you to have more sessions than you want or need. We may find we get to a place where we are no longer doing any therapeutic work in the sessions due to you being in a better place and having experienced some healing. If this happens, we will have a conversation about whether it is a good time to bring therapy to a close.
